Earth is ruled by large landmasses called continents, there are seven in all, and overall only take up less than 30% of Earth's surface. Different climates and conditions make different landforms on the surface of the continents. For example, the Rocky Mountains splits up North America, the Andes distinguish the western edge of South America, and the Himalaya tower above India. The Plateau of Tibet forms the rugged root of Asia. These continents however, are really just the borders of our world. Inside these huge regions, we split them up into smaller regions called countries. Antarctica is the only continent that has no countries in it. Australia is a continent and a country. On the other hand, the giant continent we call Africa, has 54 countries of the 195 countries we have given this world.
