The Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean, and contains almost 50 percent of the planet's water supply. This ocean isn't just the biggest, but it's also the deepest. The average depth is about 14,040 feet deep. That's 10 times the height of the Empire State Building!! The Pacific ocean contains more than 25,000 islands as well!! All of these range in size as well. From, New Guinea, which is about 309,000 square feet to islands you can walk across in one minute. Many of these scattered islands form nations by combining each other. Such as the Marshall Islands and the Philippines. At 103,147,233.36 square miles, it's twice the size of the Atlantic!! This ocean gets its name from the Spanish word pacifico, and that means "peaceful". During his quest around the world, Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan thought the Pacific was calm, and so he named it.
