UNIT 4.2 Prepare Compost
Title: Prepare Compost
Aim: To prepare a compost pile
Ingredients: Compost bin/pit or site for compost heap, organic matter (dead leaves, farmyard manure), topsoil, woodrash, rake, hoe
Method:
Prepare compost pile by digging holes 150 cm x 150cm to a depth of 60-90 cm. Compost heap/pit must be located near to the areas where compost will be used.
Prepare materials for layers by cutting bulky materials into small pieces.
Lay leaves in prepared pit and press these down with the feet to form base of compost pit or heap.
Spread layer of soil and wood ashes on top of layers in #3.
Pile on layers of plant and animal remains, farmyard manure alternating with soil and wood ashes until pit is filled.
Also include old compost.
Apply layer of soil as final cover (when pit is filled).
Put sticks into the ground at the four corners of the pit to prevent compost from falling off.
Moisten heap/pit at regular intervals. Ensure the compost is not too wet.
Turn materials in pit occasionally until organic materials is completely broken down.
Heap/pit must be covered in wet weather to protect it from the rain.
Ensure compost heap/bin is checked regularly for temperature and moisture conditions and state of decomposition.
Pay attention to personal safety and that of others.
