There are several drainage and irrigation projects in Guyana:
Tapakuma Water Extension Project
Boerasirie Boneseka Extension Project
East Demerara Conservancy
Mahaicony Abary Rice Development Scheme (MARDS)
Mahaica/Mahaicony/Abary Agricultural Development Authority (MMA/ADA)
Torani Canal Water Extension Project
Black Bush Polder Irrigation Scheme
This project supplies to the entire Essequibo Coast from Charity on the North including Somersett and Berks to Good Hope on the South. It includes the Tapakuma Lake, Mainstay Lake, Capoey Lake and Ituribisi Lake. In the dry weather, it's source is located at Dawa on the Arapialo River, a branch of the Pomeroon River.
His project was built in the days of slavery. It supplies water to the Shanks Canal located several miles parallel to the Mahaica River. The Shanks Canal supplies all the rice and farm lands in the Mahaica, Cane Grove Area with water. The East Demerara Conservancy supplies all the water to all the East Demerara villages and sugar cane lands and the Shelter Belt. The latter supplies the city of Georgetown with water which is treated and processed for consumption.
The East Demerara Water Conservancy canal extends itself along the East Bank of Demerara as far as and beyond Land of Caanan.
This project conserves water which is supplied to farm lands bordering the Kamuni Creek on the West Bank of the Demerara, sugar estates, rice fields and farm lands along the West Bank and West Coast Demerara and East bank Essequibo, reaching as far south as Bonasika.
This scheme consists of numerous canals criss-crossing with farm lands between the Mahaicony and Abary water shed. It gets its supply of water from both the Mahaicony and Abary Rivers with the use of pumping stations located at strategic points.
The centre of operation for MARDS is Burma located eight miles south of East Coast Demerara Public Road and consists of many silos nd multi-stage rice mills which are involved in the storage of paddy and the production of rice supplies by the thousands of acres of rice farmlands.
This project is located between the Abary and Berbice Rivers and it has brought several thousand acres of land under mainly rice cultivation. The Abary River is the main supplier of water to the conservancy. All farmlands including the Blairmont Sugar Estate - sugar cane lands as well as the Kaboura Cattle Ranch are supplied with water from this source.
This conservancy extends from the Berbice River water shed and the Corentyne River Water Shed. It supplies all sugar cane and other farm lands along the East Bank of the Berbice, the Canje East and East farm locations, the Lower Corentyne Sugar Estate and the East Corentyne Sugar Estates and other farm lands. There is also another connecting canal or water way to the Torani Canal. This canal links the Corentyne River to the Canje River and is supplied by the water conservancy area of the Torani Canal.
N.B. A map of this canal could not be found. If any of you do find one please share it with me..
Banks of the Torani Canal
The project was designed to benefit 75,000 acres of irrigated land, mainly for rice production which was already settled by some 6,000 farming families, 98% of whom had incomes below US$180 per head. The project included works to increase the flow of water in the Canje River (the main source of water to the project area); rehabilitation and improvement of the irrigation and drainage systems; on-farm development; and improvement of agricultural support services. The principal area of new irrigation was to be the Black Bush Frontlands, where total annual cropping of rice was expected to rise from 14,200 acres to 32,320 acres. Elsewhere (in the Black Bush Polder and in Block III), the main benefits were to be derived from increased cropping intensity resulting from more reliable dry season water supplies, and improved crop yields, derived from better drainage, water management, crop varieties and agricultural services.
Draw a map of Guyana in your portfolio showing each of these conservancies. (see references for a link to a map.)
Let's do a review of the lesson...
Post under the appropriate topic in the Forums what you learnt, what you would like to learn and what you do not understand.
