Weak AI
General or Strong AI
When people hear “AI,” they often imagine movie-style robots with emotions, personalities, or even world-dominating ambitions. Think of HAL 9000 in 2001: A Space Odyssey or J.A.R.V.I.S from Iron Man. These fictional characters would be considered General AI or Strong AI by experts.
Strong AI refers to a hypothetical form of artificial intelligence that can understand, learn, and apply knowledge across any domain at a human level or beyond. It would have the ability to reason, adapt to new situations without retraining, and potentially exhibit self-awareness. It’s important to note that this type of AI does not exist and may be decades away, if it is even possible at all.
Weak or Narrow AI
Modern AI systems do not “think” or “feel.” They do not have intentions or goals of their own; instead, they process information to generate outputs. What we have today is known as Weak AI or Narrow AI.

Weak AI is intelligence that is specialized: it can perform a defined task extremely well, but it does not generalize beyond its training. For example, an algorithm that recommends a movie, identifies a face, or answers a question in natural language is powerful within its narrow domain, but it cannot spontaneously shift to solving unrelated problems. These systems can be impressive, but they do not think, feel, or set goals on their own. They operate entirely within the boundaries of their training and programming.
