Artifact Description:
This artifact is a note that I received from the vice principal during student teaching. I was co-teaching in the general education classroom, and she came into the class to observe. She noticed that I was actively walking around the room to support students and provide proximity.
Connection to Standard:
This artifact connects to standard 4A: "Understands principles for and strategies for effective classroom and behavior management." Through actively walking around the room and being proactive about minimizing negative behavior, I have demonstrated the fulfillment of this standard.
What I learned:
I learned that the little things that we as teachers do to support students during class are important, and do not go unnoticed. This note was an encouragement to me that I was doing a great job, and that my efforts were paying off.
Artifact Description:
I have chosen to include a behavior checklist that I used for one of my students. This student had some behavior concerns such as asking to leave class often, making negative comments, and not responding to instruction on the first time. A chart was created for this student on which teachers would indicate what her behaviors were in regards to these things for each class period.
Connection to Standard:
This artifact connects to standard 4O: "Uses a variety of effective behavioral management techniques appropriate to the needs of all students that include positive behavior interventions and supports." This checklist was created to fit the needs of this specific student and their behaviors, as well as to encourage their negative behaviors to minimize.
What I learned:
By using this checklist with my student, I learned that sometimes it can be difficult to assess student behavior. Sometimes students need to leave class for legitimate reasons, or they make a negative comment because they are upset about something. Student behavior is a constant learning process.
