Artifact Description:
The artifact that I have included is a modified lesson plan. It is a general education reading lesson plan that is adapted for a made up student who has Autism Spectrum Disorder. It includes accommodations and modifications for this student, as well as the class as a whole.
Connection to Standard:
This artifact connects to standard 1H: "analyzes and uses student information to design instruction that meets the diverse needs of students and leads to ongoing growth and achievement." I used the knowledge that I have about the characteristics a student with ASD might display in a classroom, and planned instruction for them accordingly.
What I learned:
Something that I learned from completing this activity was that accommodations can be used as supports for not only students with IEP's, but also general education students. Every student learns differently, and it's important that we strive to help them reach their full potential.
Artifact Description:
This artifact is a paper that I wrote in my student teaching seminar course. In this paper, I reflect upon my own experiences growing up in education, and how my perspective of education has changed since getting into the field myself. I note the areas in which I see the concept of privilege in my life, and how my eyes have been opened to the experiences that students come to school with.
Connection to Standard:
This artifact connects to standard 1C: "understands how teaching and student learning are influenced by development (physical, social and emotional, cognitive, linguistic), past experiences, talents, prior knowledge, economic circumstances and diversity within the community." It corresponds with this part of the standard because I reflected upon how every student comes to school with their own background that highly influences who they are in the classroom, and we must acknowledge this as teachers.
What I learned:
While writing this paper, I was able to consider how my views of education have changed since being a student myself. I also learned that my experiences as a student may be drastically different than than the students than I will be teaching, and being able to recognize this is essential to being an effective teacher.
