When Stroller Soared
#197 words
Stroller stood at 14.1 hands, about the height of a VW Beetle.
In 1986, Stroller did what many thought was impossible; he competed in the Olympics Games representing Great Britain in show jumping.
“Ladies and Gentlemen,” the announcer called, “this course is among the biggest ever built. These competitors must jump over fences more than 6 feet tall and some over 7 feet apart.”
Stroller eyed his competitors: the last four Olympic gold medalists, towering over him. Their long legs sprang over the jumps. Yet, many knocked poles. Others missed turns. Stroller puffed his chest.
Trotting into the ring, Stroller disappeared behind the 7 foot wall; all that was visible was the top of his rider's helmet.
Stroller flared his nostrils and shook his mane. He galloped over the tall white wall. Room to spare. Being little meant he could turn on a dime. He soared across the wide oxer like he had wings. Kicking up his hooves, he skipped over the last pair of jumps.
Leaving the ring, Stroller held his head high, knowing that he did his very best.
Soon, flags were raised and anthems played. Stroller wore the silver medal.
