For Geneviève, winter had overstayed its welcome. It refused to leave, settling in under a thick blanket of white and gray. She was tired of the cold, the bare trees, and the snow.
“I hate all things snow!” she declared.
“Even snowdrops?” her mom asked. “Their blossoms mean spring is coming.”
“I hate anything that has the word snow in it.” She stomped her boot, splashing the slush.
But then she saw it:
a speck of green poking through the icy crystals. Could it be a snowdrop?
“If it comes from snow. It must be horrible, like asparagus!” Geneviève told the bluebird sky.
Each day Geneviève checked. Was it growing taller or was the snow melting away? Soon there were white sleepy buds. The delicate flowers dripped down like they were waking up from a long nap.
“Snowdrops.” Geneviève sighed. “They’re beautiful.”
