FILO is an add-on to an everyday object to sharing messages in a very public space in a very private way, right where they are supposed to be heard. With FILO we wanted to design something, that lets you place and share messages in/or around the wardrobe to use exactly this aspect, to deliver messages right at the moment, when they should be heard. Whereas the wardrobe is something so public in every home, we focused a lot on the aspect of privacy and wanted the messages to have still a very personal character.
When we started with our work on the different furniture, we started also to think about the concepts which are already in the furniture. In case of the wardrobe, the concept behind it is very simple. It is never placed in a closed nor private room. It is a piece of furniture that is placed in your hallway, shared and seen by every visitor, yourself and everyone living with you day in and day out. But the exciting aspect of the wardrobe lies more in the situations you are using it before you leave your home and right after you come back. We made multiple brainstorming sessions and design thinking, then we started to do rapid prototyping in order to test and have a satisfying result.
To provide personal privacy by using FILO, we added individual hangers with different designs and stencils, that you can carry around with your keychain, underneath these hangers there is a button to be pressed when your flatmate/partner wants to leave a message for you, A blinking light, in the hole that is left, when you take your keys, indicates new messages, so that you can still decide whether you want to hear the message or if its an inconvenient time, to hear the message all you need is just to get the hanger back on the keyholder and it will be the only trigger to play the message for you.
My role was to design FILO as a device and 3D model the attached features (e.g. Speaker, Microphone) and design the interaction with the user keychains, and finally attach it to the wardrobe.
