Some people would like to start studying numbers for new languages. Babylon is a Smartwatch that lets the users learn numbers in different languages. Based on research and data analysis, the results reflected three psychological needs.
Autonomy, Simulation, and Competence the combination of those psychological needs made us empathize with the users and create a unique functionality of the watch, where it fills the user needs. My role in this project was to facilitate the design thinking session and to translate the research results into an interactive design.
Needs cards: Each card describes a psychological need, which can be a source of positive experiences – also when interacting with technical products. Need cards provide both orientation and inspiration for the design of interactive products. In addition to a brief description you find typical feelings and quotes related to a particular need and a list of feelings which a product can trigger if it addresses this need.
For Babylon we used the following need cards:
Autonomy: Where the users can feel they control their actions and not affected by external forces that cause their actions.
Simulation: The users would feel a lot of excitement and enjoyment through discovery.
Competence: The users will feel the confidence and effectiveness in their actions that will give them more empowerment.
The UI was designed, with a minimalist approach for different reasons. First, the size of the smartwatch is limited. Therefore, it would not be relevant to add a lot of items to such a small display.
Second, reducing confusion for the user interaction by not displaying a lot of items on the smartwatch.
Third, from an aesthetics perspective, it will be a clear and clean design that is functional and effective. The UI is color-coded, the track of hours, the digital hour, and the text hour are all having the same code color, similarly is applied to the minutes but in a different color than the hours. That designed in case there were tropical languages. Therefore, the user will not be lost in translation and will be able to continue learning the numbers in new languages.
