Several aquariums in Europe now offer the chance to dive with sharks, moray eels, sting rays and tropical fish.
In May 2009, I gave it a try at Marineland (www.marineland.es/marineland/mallorca) in Mallorca. Further info here: http://sharkdives.blueplanetaquarium.com/about_us/faq.asp?css=1.
The tank was 25 metres wide and 8.5 metres deep and I dived for 45 minutes. There were only 3 people in the tank in total (including our guide) so it was a fantastic experience to get “up close and personal” to marine life that would normally be elusive. There were 8 sharks in the tank (4 different breeds – nurse shark, sand bar shark, lemon sharks & wobbegongs).
In the UK, it is possible to dive with sharks at Ellesmere Port and Edinburgh Aquarium. Ginny McGrath from the Sunday Times has written a brilliant article about her experience of diving with 10ft Sand Tiger Sharks in Edinburgh – go for it, I can’t wait to go again soon!
