On Friday morning we set off for Wales, it was heavy rain the whole way. I couldn’t help wondering how waterproof my tent was, and whether I’d brought along enough warm clothes but I needn’t have worried because as we arrived on the Isle of Anglesey, it became a sunny afternoon, phew :-)
We were camping at Blackthorn Farm. It was an incredible setting, 180 degree sea views, great facilities and tasty fish’n’chips. Tony’s “Chips Away” marquee became our club house for the weekend and it sheltered us nicely from all the elements. On Saturday morning we travelled just a few mins to Trearddur Bay but the sea was too choppy so we changed our plans and drove to Dorothea Quarry in Snowdonia National Park instead. The scenery was lovely – amazing granite cliffs and mountains. Dorothea Quarry is at the base of Mount Snowdon (next to a steam train which you can catch to the top) which makes it easy to find. Their website is: www.divevivian.com. There is a choice of platforms to dive from – one high, one low. I recommend the high one – its fun, enjoy!
On Saturday evening, we dived in Trearddur Bay. The bay is shallow so it was perfect for all the recently qualified Ocean Divers. I think Tonyand I achieved the max depth of the group, a whopping 7.3 metres! We saw a lobster, plaice and some crabs. The visibility was excellent and it was a fun dive.On Sunday morning, we dived in Trearddur Bay but further around this time, in a slightly more exposed spot. We had great visibility again. We saw lots and lots of kelp, jelly fish, wrasse and a large spider crab. Unfortunately the weather got a bit choppy again so the swim back was hard work for everyone but a useful learning experience.
