This is the tool explored by the RLC in February 2021. It is designed to encourage the use of "Activity Frames" to better identify STEM identity work of learners in real time. It also offers these Activity Frames as tools to help in planning and framing STE[A]M activities to support and this identity work of learners.
Small portions of this webinar were used to introduce current research around STE[A]M Identity development and the idea of "identity work." Small groups then worked through prompts and tools from the slide decks of these presenters to learn more about the possibilities of seeing STE[A]M identity in new ways.
Segment #1: 11:07 - 13:55
Large group sensemaking around Tools of Identity and Culture Slide - specifically cultural production and reproduction.
Segment #2: 13:55-15:54
Breakouts around Contortions of Self asking each other:
Q: How compelling, imaginable, & achievable are the meanings of promising “STEAM person” for different youth in your rural setting? (from Heidi Carlone's webinar portion)
Segment #3: 38:18 - pause at 40ish,
Breakouts around opportunity spaces and the ideas of visibility and access.
STEM For All Multiplex (the site that offered this webinar and repository of NSF funded projects including videos and other resources )
This three page Jamboard was used for breakout conversations after each segment of the webinar was shared with the large group.
The Jamboard was shared as a view only document for groups to reference. The visuals come from the slides provided by the presenters in the webinar. There are also stickie notes on each Jam with prompts for small group discussion to dive further into these tools.
This one of the many frameworks from Learning in Places. It was used in the Fall 2020 Developing STE[A]M Identities in Rural Settings Session and continues to guide the RLC sensemaking around STEM ID work into 2021.
The Learning in Places tools feature heavily in the Rural Learning Collaborative. To access the full selection of frameworks from Learning in Places go here.
