The Central Oregon Hybrid Facilitation Institute of '24-'25 was guided by the research from this article among others. Please click on the title image to access the article. Scroll down to Table 2 and the text below that to dive into what the researchers share really changed teachers' practice in online professional development in their study. The focus on cognitive activation and collaboration were key in the creation of this institute and for the professional development experiences that participating teachers ended up creating for each other.
"4.2. How are quality characteristics of online PD associated with teachers’ satisfaction and with changes in their professional practices?
In line with our first assumption, we found that cognitive activation, collaboration, and clarity and structure of online PD were related to teachers' satisfaction with online PD. Contrary to our second assumption, however, only cognitive activation and collaboration were associated with changes in teachers’ professional practices. This means that teachers assess online PD positively when the course is well-structured and sets clear goals. It does not, however, contribute any insight into how online PD can help teachers to change their professional practices (Reeves & Pedulla, 2011). Teachers reported changes in their professional practices after attending online PD activities that made them question established routines, that provided them with new insights, and that initiated discussions among participants."

Example Ideas for 10 minute practice round for Session #5 and Session #6
Here are two examples of ideas that could be 10 minute practice sessions for the main breakout practice event in session #5 and #6. It is your chance to PRACTICE using Zoom tools and also facilitating adult conversation on Zoom. Feel free to base your plan on one of these two OR build your very own!
PRO TIP: BE YOURSELF, SHARE SOMETHING IMPORTANT TO YOU, BE PLAYFUL, GET OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE SO YOU CAN GROW AS A FACILITATOR
Please not: These examples have two different goals. How do they differ?
EXAMPLE 1. Showing the group a new technology tool:
Introduce yourself
Tell the group you are about to share an idea for how to use a tool
Ask the group if they have used it or heard of it (raise hand for yes, or?)
Share screen to show the tool in use - Go slowly and repeat.
Put link to access tool into chat
Have the group go to the link
Give group quick prompt to engage in with tool
Wrap up by asking group how they could see using the tool (share out or chat or?)
EXAMPLE 2. Gathering ideas for taking students outside:
Introduce yourself
Show a picture of students outside
Facilitate a short conversation about the benefits of taking students outside
Create a Padlet and put link in chat
Have group post as many experiences they remember of learning outside and encourage posting of pictures. Share screen to show how to use Padlet
Facilitate conversation around how to group these around themes and trends
Wrap up by sharing another picture of students outside and a quote or final remark about learning on the land
