Place-Based Education, Place-Based Initiatives & Tribal Conversations

For the Spring '23 series we had 22 prek-12 educators join us from all over Rural Oregon representing Columbia, Coos, Deschutes, Jackson, Malheur, Tillamook, Marion, Klamath, Lincoln, Washington, Benton, Josephin, Clatsop, and Jackson Counties.

This is one of several themes that have emerged from the group for further study and exploration since launching the network in early 2020. Scroll down for resources from '20-'23.. In the Spring of 2023 the "Place-Based Education" Series grew to become
"Place-Based Initiatives & Tribal Conversations" thanks in part to recent growth in the network made possible by the Gray Family Foundation through spring of '26.

This ethnogeographic atlas of Native place names documents and describes more than four hundred place names. The full-color, detailed maps and the narrative that introduces and supports them paint a picture of a way of life. This meticulous assemblage of memory and meaning echoes cultural and geographical information that has all but disappeared from common knowledge.

Spring 2023 Session #2 Tuesday May 23, 2023

During session #2 we shared reflections on the Snoqualmie Tribes suggestion for mindfulness over conquest, explored the GRuB Curriculum, and shared our own learning around the tribal history of the land where we teach.

Reflecting on Snoqualmie Tribe Ancestral Lands Movement

We also looked at what kind of actions we can take to further amplify messages and work of tribal land. The Snoqualmie Tribe in Washington was shown as an example with their #recreaterespectfully Instagram work.

During Session #1 Sarah Anderson from the Cottonwood School of Science and Civics shared the tremendous amount of learning that the staff at Cottonwood has gone through to learn from and elevate Native Voice and Tribal History, Shared History on their campus.
