Why start with value scales and value spheres? 

Creating a quick value scale helps you to familiarize yourself with the color you are working with and how it reacts to black and white. 

Creating a value sphere helps you to quickly see how your scale blends together and makes sure that your steps are harmoniously working together. 

Premixing your values enables a clean application of paint. Place each brush stroke on the canvas without reworking. 

You must understand how the core shadow provides information about the girth, volume, and character of your subject. Creating a value sphere shows that the shape of the core shadow is a continuously curving surface. The core shadow is a series of connections and breaks between your color values. 

Assignment Instructions 

PART 1: 

1. Once you have chosen which color you would like to work with (yellow, red, or blue) create a quick 7-step value scale with that color. 

2. Next, create a value light sphere using your new value scale. Below is an example in black and white. You will be doing yours in your color of choice.
