The objective of this exercise is to create a grid showing the range of values and temperatures that are possible using just two colors.

Using a pencil and a ruler, draw a 9"x9" grid on your paper and subdivide it into 1" squares. When you finish, your grid should be 9 squares across and 9 squares down, for a total of 81 squares.

STEP 2: Mix the ultramarine blue and burnt sienna

Squeeze ultramarine blue on the left of your palette and burnt sienna on the right. Be sure to use enough paint so you will have plenty for mixing the variations.

The easiest way to approach this task is to make a dead neutral halfway between your pure ultramarine blue and pure burnt sienna, using a palette knife to mix the paint.
Once you have made your mixtures, apply them to the top row of your panel, placing the pure ultramarine blue in the upper-left corner, the pure burnt sienna in the upper-right corner and the variations in the squares in between.

On the far left and far right side of your grid, tint your ultramarine blue and burnt sienna in various increments until you get an almost white.

Be sure to clean your brush or your palette knife after every mixture so you don't contaminate each new color!

To complete the rest of the grid, add white to your six remaining color piles as you would with a value step scale, making each step lighter as you work.
