Create a value step scale with each step representing a pure tone. You will create a value step scale with black and white as well as raw umber and white.

The goal is to have an even gradation between each step so that the jump feels natural.

Top tips: Create your tones on your palette FIRST, and THEN put them on your paper strip. Make sure there is NO white space between your tones on your strip and your paint is laid down evenly and opaquely.

1. Draw TWO 1" by 6" rectangles and divide it into 1-inch squares.
2. Start with titanium white and paint it on one side of your palette and then add ivory black on the other end.
3. Mix a pile of mid-tone grey as your middle value.
4. Next, mix down toward black and up toward white. You will create 6 total (including pure black and white) value squares.
5. You will repeat this process again, using raw umber and white.
When you have completed your value scales, be sure to upload a picture of it to Schoology.
