As a practice piece, the poster study releases you from the pressure of having to get everything right. Use the opportunity to take risks and see things as they really are, rather than what you suppose them to be.
Choose a reference that is relatively simple and used a limited range of values. You may use a still life photo or a painting as a reference.
Using a ruler and pencil, draw three boxes that are 5"x5". You will most likely have to use more than one page for this. You paper can be oriented horizontally or vertically.
Using your 6 value step scales from earlier, you will recreate your reference picture three times. You may use your black/white value scale or raw umber/white value scale.
To save time, do not do a pencil sketch on your paper. Use your paintbrush and paint to sketch out the picture.
1st time: Limit the scheme to two values: black/raw umber and white.
2nd time: Increase your values to four. DO NOT blend your values. There should be FOUR distinct values.
3rd time: Use all six values to reveal the surface texture of your reference.
