De la serie Amoxohtoca

En 2014, después de la histórica exhibición de códices prehispánicos en el Museo Nacional de Antropología, en la que por primera vez se exhibieron Códices Precolombinos a una audiencia mexicana después de ser tomados por España y viajaron a las colecciones más exclusivas de Europa después de 500 años, quedé completamente abrumado por la falta de información acerca de estos procesos de escritura que, a pesar ser únicas y parte de las referencias de la cultura mexicana en el extranjero, nos han enseñado en México a pensar que son arcaicas y se encuentran en segundo término en relación de la escritura y lectura occidental. Parte de nuestras prácticas racistas sedimentadas en el México que vivimos.

Después de dicho evento, decidí comenzar a estudiar cultura y lengua náhuatl como una manera de combatir y desaprender las prácticas de racismo y colonialismo sedimentado para eventualmente convertirlo en parte de mi práctica.

El primer proyecto de esta naturaleza es la serie Amoxohtoca (Seguir el camino del libro), una investigación artística de largo aliento sobre tradiciones mnemónicas, filosofías indígenas y modos de composición y escritura experimental.

La primera composición de dicha investigación fue Topializ (Lo que es necesario preservar)

Topializ es una composición por instrucciones orales basadas en el Toltecayotl (Filosofía Tolteca) que se encuentra guiada por tres dispositivos activados a través de gestos performativos.

Esta composición, por su naturaleza, puede ser ejecutada 3 veces. Una vez hechas dichas iteraciones, la obra se convertirá en una instalación que muestra los diferentes procesos de cada pareja así como la elasticidad de las instrucciones orales entre el compositor y las 3 parejas.

El compositor transmite las instrucciones orales a la primer pareja, posteriormente, la primer pareja transmite después las instrucciones a la segunda pareja. El mismo proceso sucederá entre la segunda y la tercer pareja.

• Yuhcatiliztli (Lo que hace ser a cada cosa de una manera determinada)

Un tapete de palma que sirve como mediador entre las instrucciones orales y la pareja que realiza la iteración de la pieza.

• Topializtli (Lo que es necesario preservar/salvar)

26 hojas de papel con palabras en náhuatl y sus traducciones en español con 4 tipos de tiras de colores dentro de una caja de palma hecha a mano. Cada pareja puede usar 8 palabras.

• Tlapializtli (La acción de salvar o preservar)

3 sobres con distintos cortes. Cada corte en el sobre se encuentra relacionado a las instrucciones orales y tiene como objetivo insertar las hojas de papel con palabras en náhuatl como una manera de crear una estructura musical a la composición

La primer iteración de este trabajo fue hecha por Cristián Alvear y Santiago Astaburuaga en Chile y publicado en Marginal Frequency y puede ser escuchado aqui.

Un estudio exhaustivo sobre Topializ fue hecho por Santiago Astaburuaga en su proyecto de Doctorado en Composición en la UNAM. Parte de este estudio puede ser leído aquí.

La segunda iteración de Topializ fue hecha por Catriel Nievas y Sergio Merce en Argentina y se encuentra en proceso de publicación por la disquera Drowned by Locals en Jordan.

From the serie Amoxohtoca

In 2014, after a historic exhibition of Prehispanic Codexes at the National Anthropology Museum in Mexico in which for the first time in history the codexes were exhibited to the mexican audience after they were taken from Spain and they travel to the most exclusive collections of Europe 500 years ago, I was totally impressed by the lack of information about these writings processes that despite being unique and part of the references about mexican culture, we are taught they are archaic and in second term in relation to western writing and reading. Part of the sedimented racist practices we still live in Mexico.

After that event, I decided to start studying Nahuatl Culture and Language as a way of unlearning these sedimented racist and colonial practices and eventually turn it into part of my practice.

The first project of this nature is the serie Amoxohtoca (To follow the path of the book), a long breath artistic research on oral traditions, indigenous philosophies, modes of writing and experimental composition.

The first composition coming out of Amoxohtoca is Topializ (What is necessary to preserve)

Topializ is a composition by oral instructions based on Toltecayotl (Toltec Philosophy) and guided by 3 devices who are activated by performative gestures :

• Yuhcatiliztli (The way every object is the way it is)

A palm rug who serves as a mediator between the oral instructions and the couple who iterates the piece.

• Topializtli (What is necessary to save/preserve)

26 sheets of paper with Nahuatl words and its translations and 4 different color strings inside a palm box made by hand. Each couple can use 8 Nahuatl words.

• Tlapializtli (The action of saving/preserving)

3 envelopes with different cuts. Each cut of the envelope is related to the oral instructions and is meant to put the sheets of paper with Nahuatl words as a way to create a musical structure for the composition.

The composer gives the oral instructions to the first couple, then the first couple will give the instructions to the second one. The same process will happen between the second and third couple.

This composition, because of its nature, can only be executed 3 times. Afterwards it will become an installation showing the different processes from each couple as well as the elasticity of the oral instructions between the composer and the 3 couples
