All Navy and Nurse Applicants must conduct an Navy ROTC Applicant Fitness Assessment (AFA) and provide their scores to their recruiter in order for their application to be considered complete and forwarded for consideration by the selection board.
The test consists of abdominal crunches, push-ups, and a one-mile run. The purpose of the test is to evaluate your level of physical fitness.
At the applicant's request, the test can be administered by any physical education instructor, athletics coach, an active duty officer, active duty E-7 or NJROTC instructor. Due to COVID-19 this can also be adminstered by a Family Member.
Applicants accustomed to regular physical activity should have no difficulty with the AFA.
Being properly conditioned prior to reporting to your Navy ROTC Unit cannot be overemphasized.
You will be far better prepared to meet the stringent physical demands of the Navy ROTC Program if you maintain a high level of physical fitness during high school
It is recommended that applicants spend 20-30 minutes to stretch and warm up prior to starting the assessment.
Ensure you are in appropriate active wear & tennis shoes
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water & having a good breakfast (avoid dairy products within 1 hour of assessment)
Applicants are encouraged to do their best and should strive to obtain their optimal results. There are no minimum scores, but the Fitness Score chart will give applicants an idea of what would be acceptable. Anything "Good" or higher would be considered acceptable. Because we are in the Rocky Mountains, please look at the scores for elevations over 5,000 feet if it applies. These are also for 1.5 mile runs vice a 1 mile run, however, any time under 8 minutes for males and 9:30 for females, should be in the acceptable range.
