EN 16351:2021 is the European standard that defines the requirements for cross-laminated timber (CLT) used in structural applications such as buildings and bridges. It’s a key reference for manufacturers, designers, and engineers working with CLT across Europe.
This standard sets out provisions for:
Material composition:
CLT panels made of coniferous species or poplar
At least three orthogonally bonded layers
Layer thickness between 6 mm and 60 mm
Optional inclusion of wood-based panels (up to 45 mm thick)
Panel types:
Type 1: Solid wood layers without large finger joints
Type 2: Solid wood layers with large finger joints
Type 3: Combination of wood and wood-based panels
Performance requirements:
Structural integrity
Moisture resistance (Service Class 1 or 2 per EN 1995-1-1)
Biological durability
Fire resistance (fire-retardant treatments not covered)
Manufacturing and quality control:
Adhesive specifications
Finger joint dimensions (≥45 mm)
Assessment and Verification of Constancy of Performance (AVCP)
