The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is the leading global framework for companies to set net-zero targets aligned with climate science 🌍. Its Corporate Net-Zero Standard is the world’s only science-based methodology for defining and validating corporate net-zero goals.
Definition: Targets that align with the latest climate science to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
Requirements:
Near-term targets: Rapid emissions cuts by 2030 — typically a 50% reduction across Scope 1, 2, and 3.
Long-term targets: Deep decarbonization of 90–95% of emissions by 2050.
Residual emissions: Only 5–10% may be neutralized using high-quality carbon removals (e.g., biochar, DAC).
Clarity & Credibility: SBTi provides a consistent, science-based definition of net-zero, reducing greenwashing risks.
Global Reach: Over 4,000 companies had validated net-zero targets with SBTi by the end of 2023.
Alignment with Paris Agreement: Targets follow IPCC guidelines to keep warming well below 2°C, ideally 1.5°C.
