3D Printing

Introduction

This unit is meant to add on to the Raleigh Hills 5th grade social studies unit studying the 13 original colonies that eventually became the United States of America. Each student is studying one colony. Students will use what they learn about the colony to design a small two-sided coin to 3D print with our 3 Makerbot Mini 3D Printers.

Day 1: Tinkercad Introduction

Create an account on Tinkercad
add your account to our class list (use the code provided in class)
Do each tutorial under the "Learn" section at the top
Design your own design using what you've learned.

Day 2: Start Your Medalion

Your coin must fit in a 50 mm x 50 mm x 10 mm space

Use the tools to:

Create a lip on your coin
Add the name of your colony as text
Add an image of the colony (use the state tool)
Include the year that your colony was founded

Day 3: Add Pictures to your coin

Flip your coin 180 degrees to work on the opposite side.

Create another lip or bevel

Add 1 or 2 "usage approved" images to your image. Remember, simple line drawing images are best. (See video)

Day 4: Edit for 3D Printing

Make sure that your graphics do not extend beyond the lip or bevel of your coin

Position your coin on the workplane to be best for 3D printing

Day 5: Print and Present!

Click " Export" in the top right.
Save your project to your Chromebook
Add your project to one of the USB drives for the printer.
Work with a Tech Sherpa to upload your project!
