Course Description: This course will provide students the skills necessary to deeply read and analyze a variety of literature, participate intelligently in discussions, and communicate effectively in writing. The goal of this course is to give students the tools to succeed in a freshman-level college English course and score well on the AP exam. The class focuses on imaginative fiction (short stories, novels, drama, poetry) and seeks to answer the question: What makes great literature great?
Course Objectives: After taking this course, students should:
· have read and understood a variety of literary works --focusing on imaginative fiction
· have gained further knowledge of English language and literature
· have used a writing process to write essays that have different purposes and use different styles
· have communicated coherently and intelligently with large and small audiences
· have the habits of work necessary to succeed in college
