Frequently Asked Questions
What is Horse Powered Reading?
In 2012, Dr. Michele Prickel of Concordia University in the United States saw the potential of incorporating horses and literacy education and created Horse Powered Reading®. The Horse Powered Reading® curriculum uses the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA) model to “integrate social-emotional learning with academics”. Prickel described Horse Powered Reading® as using “a few key reading skills combined with motivation, self-efficacy, and persistence taught by the horses” to create a “new type of deep learning.”
Is this program only for children with learning disabilities?
Nope! Horse Powered Reading® can truly benefit any child. Most of our participants are struggling with reading in school. They might have an IEP or be in the process of getting one, be behind on just a few standards, are catching up from COVID and online learning, may be struggling socially in school, or just want to spend some time learning in a different atmosphere.
Do the kids ride horses during the program?
This program is focused on equine-assisted learning and reading. Riding is not a regular part of our program. However, during most sessions, we use trail riding as a motivator for our students. Once the group meets their reading goals, they get to take a trail ride together on the horses.
How much does the program cost?
We want to make Rearing2Read accessible for all students—there should be no barriers to learning. We run our programs tuition free, with recommended donations. If you have questions, you can always reach out to President@rearing2read.us for more information.
