Although I filed final report with the MSAB in February, the re-synth project keeps moving in new and excitiing directions!
After the "Informance" presentation at the Minnesota Music Educators Mid-winter Conference in February, two of the attendees reached out to me about giving a performance at their respective schools in May.
As luck would have it the schools - Owatonna Middle School and Medford High School - are in neighboring towns.
Their directors, Joe Zastrow (OMS) and Nate Kroshus (MHS), were able to work out a schedule that allowed them to share the project computer (with Ableton Live), 4 Novation keyboards, Focusrite Scarlett Audio Interface, assorted cables and USB hub.
Both directors allowed me to take some of their precious rehearsal time to talk about how re-synth was created … Old man explaining tech to 15 year olds!
I am incredibly grateful to Joe and Nate and their amazing students for taking a chance on new music – especially when it's experimental and non-traditional!
More than a year since the original samples were made with the WSU Symphonic Wind Ensemble, re-synth is continues to spread its wings!
The Wenger Performing Arts Center in Owatonna opened two years ago as part of Owatonna's new High School. It is a stunning performance space with amazing acoustics. The fortuntate Owtonna Middle Schoolers got to perform in this amazing hall to a packed house of over 800!
The fact that an 8th grade band played a piece written for a high school honor band speaks volumes about this program! And they played it well.
I was backstage "just in case", but my services were never needed.

Just 10 miles north of Owatonna lies the community of Medford, Minnesota. Home to just under 1,400 residents and an excellent music program.
Band director Nathaniel Kroshus programmed re-synth as part of the Medford Pops concert. Ensembles ranging from a first year guitar class (think guided garage band) through a fine Concert Choir performed for over 300 enthusiastic friends and family.
I was backstage for the Medford performance as I had been in Owatonna. Once again, I am happy to report that my assistance was not needed!

The final step in this project will take place in August 2025. The project computer, software, HDMI monitor, MIDI keyboard, audio interface, microphones, stands, headphones, cables, et. al., will be donated to Bluffview Montessori School in Winona where I will assisted their music director, Christopher Dubis, in creating a Music Technology Lab.
For the moment, Janet and I are taking a few weeks off to visit Scotland and then back to Germany for time with family.
