My first railway memory was made on the day I joined 7th February 1977. I was a traction trainee at Ipswich station in a small room with four others at the end of platform 3/4.

After the instructor (Harry Whitman) had introduced himself, he said “ first thing we are going to do, is put the kettle on.” I then thought to myself, “ I like this job!”
