I have many memories when train spotting as a young boy. My favourite one was when I used to go on the railway bridge linking Grove Road to Totley Brook Road, Totley overlooking the Hope Valley Line. At the side of the footbridge is the Totley Tunnel East signal Box.
If Mr. Webb, the signalman was on duty, he used to let me go and sit in the box with my pen & paper to trainspot in comfort. If it was a bank holiday Monday, the excursion trains would be one after another. If we missed a train number, he would ring down to the next box & ask if the signalman would get it for me. The coal trains were also very frequent. These would be shunted into the adjoining siding & the driver or fireman would come into the box to sign in.
Many happy days enjoying this simple pleasure.
