I started work as an apprentice fitter at North Road locomotive Works to the age of 16 years. I actually started on Friday 28th December 1947. Why did I start on a Friday? Well the working week was from Friday to Thursday. This was so the men could be paid on a Thursday evening, After working on week in arrears an errors and quotes could be settled on the Friday. So as can be seen I worked for the LNER one Day. The main part of the Railways were Nationalised on Monday 1st January 1948. Honestly it had nothing to do with me!
I have many stories of my work in the “shops” .Throughout the works, I worked there until I moved to the Salaried Staff in the latter part of 1956 one the on to my move to BR Headquarters in London.
