The competent teacher builds and maintains collaborative relationships to foster cognitive, linguistic, physical, and social and emotional development. This teacher works as a team member with professional colleagues, students, parents or guardians, and community members.
Given a case study and a role, I was able to cooperatively work with my team in order to make recommendations and summarize recommendations collaboratively as a group, as demonstrated by the paper below. All of my ideas were summarized in the paper. I was also able to summarize other "professionals" ideas and recommendations and put them into a document that can be used to help make a plan for a student that needs help.
Ilinois Professional Teaching Standard 8K talks about participating in teams that problem-solve to help student growth.( Illinois State Board of Education, 2013) This was achieved in this lesson because we all saw that there were things that needed to change in student behavior and learning and we problem-solved using ideas together to find the best plan for the child. This shows that I understand and can listen to others and summarize their ideas to help give my students a plan that will be effective. I was able to coordinate times to work with them and bounce ideas off of them until we all came to a consensus on how the student could be helped. This shows I can work collaboratively with my peers to complete a goal.
I learned that it is hard to work with others sometimes. finding time to work with them and agreeing on things can be hard when you are all coming from different places. Being thoughtful and taking time to think and regroup later was helpful for this project.
Illinois Professional Learning Standard 8J says the competent teacher works with all school personnel (e.g., support staff, teachers, paraprofessionals) to develop learning climates for the school that encourage unity, support a sense of shared purpose, show trust in one another, and value individuals. (Illinios State Board of Education, 2013) I think this was achieved while doing this meeting I worked with people to create a united plan for a student. While working at a school as a one-on-one aide I worked with a variety of teachers and professionals to give my student with Down Syndrome the best education possible. We all collaboratively came up with an agenda and notes on how to best serve our student with special needs.
This shows that I can work with other professionals and create a plan in a real life situation. I can help come up with goal to make the session go smoother and I can work through and learn from other peers. It also shows that peers accept me and I am a contributing member of my community.
In this lesson, I learned that the lesson goes smoother with objectives. I also learned that everyone has a different viewpoint and sees things from a different lense so it is important to listen to everyone. I also learned that I can learn from others even when I am the facilitator of the meeting and people are looking to me for answers.
