The competent teacher has foundational knowledge of reading, writing, and oral communication within the content area and recognizes and addresses student reading, writing, and oral communication needs to facilitate the acquisition of content knowledge.
While I did not create this visual, I have an understanding that all students can give and receive information in different ways.
Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 6R talks about modifying materials to the students level. This resource does just that. This is one example of giving the students the visuals they need to communicate with others and be active participants using these words to communicate answers and ideas.
I used this in a lesson plan once and I learned that you can really get more participation out of children by letting them use these to answer. Even some students that were upset or having a hard time could use these instead of talking.
The lesson plans below are not reading, writing or communication lessons. However, these lessons are able to show that I teach reading and literacy in a variety of subjects, because I am aware of their importance. The first lesson is a lesson talking about math problems, however, there is a goal of reading in terms of asking and answering questions based on text. The Second lesson is about the effects of heat or the sun on the Earth's surface. The goal for part of this lesson was for students to use communication and social skills to interact effectively with others.
Both of those are reading and oral communication skills that can be incorporated into all types of lessons, not just ELA lessons. This supports Illinois Learning Standard 6Q that says integrates reading, writing, and oral communication to engage students in content learning. (Illinois State Board of Education, 2013) Making sure I incorporate reading into this lesson added an extra layer of awareness that reading, literacy and oral language should be in my mind during all lessons and made me more aware of teaching it.
In making these lessons I learned that adding an ELA lense to my teaching takes attention and through when creating the lesson, it also made me think more carefully about how students were communicating with me and each other and it enriches the lesson.
This communication board helps me to work with students and have them answerer questions in the classroom, even with they are not able to verbally speak. It has basic feeling and actions that are common in the education setting.
Ilinois Professional Teaching Standard 6C talks about the role of language in learning and communication theory. This lesson supports that in students need to be able to communication and talk in a fulent way and this board is a way that this can happen This board is used when students are feeling like they have something to say but are too worked up to say it for one reason or another. Each student has one that works for them and their specific needs. More board are added or taken away based on their needs at a certain time. It helps my students communicate when they need it the most. There are also boards for answering questions during reading and writing classes
Through using these, I realized how hard it can be for students to communicate. Sometimes using things like these allow student to talk and say there mind, when they cant do it verbally. It gives my students a lot more chance to be actively participating in a lesson as well.
