The competent teacher structures a safe and healthy learning environment that facilitates cultural and linguistic responsiveness, emotional well-being, self-efficacy, positive social interaction, mutual respect, active engagement, academic risk-taking, self-motivation, and personal goal-setting.
Rationale:
My artifact in this case was a website that could be used within my classroom one day. Through creating this website, I took my ideas of what I believe an educator should be and expanded that to create a website that showcases my ideas for a classroom centered around my beliefs. This website was produced to help me see what goes into just setting up an effective classroom.
I believe through this website I have used many Teaching standards, but in particular this one stands out as framing what I did in this website; “Standard 4 - Learning Environment – The competent teacher structures a safe and healthy learning environment that facilitates cultural and linguistic responsiveness, emotional well-being, self-efficacy, positive social interaction, mutual respect, active engagement, academic risk-taking, self-motivation, and personal goal-setting.” (Illinois State Board of Education, 2013)
Through thinking about different procedures, theories, and expectations I have for my students, I have through about the best learning environment for them. It shows that I understand that the way they learn, what they learn, and how they learn it is important. In having a place I am showing that I am self-motivated and a goal setter. Through thinking about diversity and how I would use that in the classroom I am facilitating cultural and linguistic responsiveness. Through using collaborative and conflict resolution learning strategies, I am showing that I care about the student’s emotion well-being, positive social interaction, mutual respect, and active engagement. Throughout the website I show these as signs of development.
Through creating this website, I learned about all the little things that make a classroom great. I learned a lot of what I need to consider. I learned I need to be detail oriented, warm and engaging to do what is best for my students. I learned more about my personal goals as a teacher and the goals I will have for my students as well.

A clean enviornment with multiple spaces to work is important for students. I worked hard to maintain this structrue in the classroom and give students multiple appropriate places for them to learn and self regulate or take a break and play. Like Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 4I suggested I created a safe healthy environment that maximized student learning by keeping places clean and safe. (Illinois State Board of Education, 2013)I gave multiple spots to learn and grow and left room for flexibility in where and how they accessed materials
I spent time making sure these areas were clean and used appropriately by myself and my paraprofessionals. The sensory room on the far right was used as a reward or to help students calm down when needed. In some instances students could chose to work at the group table(second picture) or in their stations (first picture). Some instances I would have students stay in one place or another because I knew that is where they would be the most successful in their work.
I learned that spending time making sure you have a clean but also practical environment is important. I also learned that you have to be flexible and allow the space to grow with your students. There were some setups that I had to work on and had to move around or change so that my students could function to the best of their abilities.
Giving students the words/materials to communicate and giving them visuals and choices in their rewards and feelings helps students to regulate themselves and follow classroom routines. This is a visual we use in our classrooms. I change what they are working for or the amount of tokens they need to earn to get there as needed. This token system is supported by standard 4O, that says you should find a variety of behavior management Techniques to help your students. (Illinois State Board of Education, 2013) This token system as well as the zone and communication board system all help students stay regulated and help their behavior. They know the expectations and how to communicate which helps behavior. Earing breaks also helps with behavior. This helps create a good working environment because the kids know what they need to do to get through their work successfully.
