Giro - Project for the Valorization of the Protected Area of Cabo Girão/Field trip to the Protected Area of Cabo Girão

The Insular Geography Association presented, in the school, the GiRO project, whose objective is the valorisation of the Cabo Girão Protected Area. This is an area with a recent protection status, where socio-economic activities occur, essentially linked to agriculture, tourism and leisure activities in nature. However, knowledge of the area, both from a biophysical and socio-cultural point of view, has significant gaps that may compromise its protection and limit its valorisation.

After the presentation, a field trip was made to Cabo Girão, one of the highest capes in the world, with 589 metres.

Class visits/guided tour of the school

The afternoon was spent at the school. First contact was made with the students who will participate in the project and were, also, able to attend Geography and English classes, in which there was a very interesting interaction between those involved.

The last activity of the day consisted of a guided tour of the school, promoted by two students. In this visit we passed by specific subject rooms, such as music and technological education, IT rooms, library, school radio, canteen, sports fields, outdoor areas and the gymnasium for teachers and non-teaching staff, among others.

Day 3

Teachers' workshop/Traditional lunch

During the workshop the teachers had the chance to know all the platforms we are going to use during our project. The Czech coordinator presented the work already done in eTwinning and all the tasks connected with the ongoing project "We eat responsibly" that we had started at the beginning of the Erasmus project. The Portuguese coordinator suggested the tool for the project map, the Italian coordinator introduced the work on our webpage and the Spanish coordinator suggested other useful platforms from his previous projects (thinglink, canva, mentimeter).

In this visit, we were given several information, such as the date of creation of the reserve, its objective, the main characteristics (fauna and flora), as well as the impact that this reserve had on the conservation of fish species that were threatened by human activity.
