Participants will gain practical strategies to integrate the NYS Social Studies Framework, Social Studies Standards, and Social Studies Practices into the curriculum to support civic mindedness. Topics include: Civic Readiness, Civic Literacy, aligning ELA/SS curriculum to maximize time, inquiry-based learning, using stimuli-based questioning, and many other engaging strategies to integrate social studies practices into elementary classrooms.

During this introductory training, participants will develop an understanding of the Seal of Civic Readiness and its requirements including but not limited to the following: 1. Civic Readiness 2. Civic Knowledge 3. Civic Skills and Action 4. Civic Mindsets 5. Civic Experience <> Participants will learn the benefits of offering the seal as an accolade through an overview of High School Graduation Requirements and the importance of the "SEAL” as: 1. Pathway to Graduation requirement 2. Further distinction on the student's High School Diploma 3. Importance of the SEAL 4. Essential elements and examples of Capstone Projects completed by High School students 5. Incorporation of DEI 6. Review of the Application Process 7. Review of Frequently Asked Questions <> Participants will be given concrete examples of materials from pilot schools throughout NYS from which to model and build their own seal program.

Join fellow educators to explore middle school social studies in New York State and how Civics and Citizenship are found throughout the New York State Social Studies Framework's Key Ideas/Conceptual Understandings, Practices, and Standards. This learning opportunity will be broken into three main components: 1. Setting the Foundation - Civics, The Framework, and the Seal of Readiness 2. Building a Civics Focus to Support Student Engagement 3. Envisioning Middle School (Grades 7 and 8) Civics Capstone Projects. Participants will examine the Civic Seal of Readiness and 4+1 Pathway and how it can change social studies education within classrooms, schools, districts, and across the state. Focus will be spent on shifting practices from implicit to explicit instruction and how this can benefit students K-12.
