Apply leadership concepts and skills to promote the provision of competent, compassionate, cost-effective, and safe care in a variety of settings and systems.
NUR 464 - Leadership and Management of Nursing:
The top quality of a bachelor's prepared nurse is found in their ability to be a leader. After completing this course, I grew in my ability to lead and manage a team. In theory, I learned about management styles, performance appraisals, budgeting, staffing, shared governance, and conflict management. I shadowed a nurse manager at a local hospital and experienced the day-to-day routines of a nursing leader. With the nurse manager, I collaborated on a quality improvement project. The outcome of the project is to promote efficient and thorough nurse handoff reports. We implemented the use of electronic handoff reports to improve the transfer process from the emergency department to the medical-surgical units.
NUR 331 - Evidence-Based Practice:
I appraised and evaluated literature to improve my research and critical thinking skills. Quality evidence in research is necessary to implement programs that can positively affect client care and reduce healthcare costs. Over the semester, I learned research design and methodologies, research appraisal, and how to translate research into practice. Using databases and journals, I performed research to solve a PICO (problem, intervention, comparison, outcome) question. I presented the evidence and gaps found in the research to my peers.
