NUR 235- Fundamentals of Professional Nursing:
As a young adult, I fail to grasp the difficulties in activities of daily living that occur in old age. To get a better sense of the effects of old age on activities of daily living, I participated in a geriatric simulation. The simulation had 10 stations that used simple but effective instruments to alter my endurance and senses. In the hardest station, I walked up and down 2 flights of stairs while breathing through a straw a couple of centimeters in diameter. Although it may seem simple, breathing through a tiny straw and walking up and down a couple of flights of stairs is extremely exhausting. When I perform activities with older-aged clients, I now know that clustering activities and patience will go a long way in their care.
NUR 346- Aging, Chronicity, and Palliative Care:
Nursing is a fast-paced and demanding industry. The nurse needs to be present physically, emotionally, and psychologically when caring for the palliative and end-of-life client. Experiencing the loss of a client can be burdensome emotionally and psychologically. As I expand my knowledge, I have learned new ways to cope with stress adaptively. I learned deep breathing, mindfulness, and yoga techniques in The Mindful and Resilient Nurse Curriculum. With these stress-relieving tools, I am more capable of navigating the challenges of nursing.
