Can I use this website for older students or for students that live in a different Canadian province?
You are welcome to use this website for older students, or students living elsewhere in Canada. However, you may need to adapt some of the activities to meet your students' needs and achieve your learning goals. Please note that this website is intended to be used by Kindergarten and grade 1/2/3 students and is aligned with the New BC Curriculum.
How do I differentiate the modules and/or activities for my students?
The great thing about using this model that is designed based on Student-centered Learning is that while your students are accessing the materials and learning at home, the teacher can check in with students and groups of students to set goals, scaffold activities, and provide additional instruction when needed. We have suggest that the teacher require students to complete Task A & B for pre-assessment and post-assessment purposes, but then allow student choice regarding what activities they will complete. The teacher can adjust the workload for individual students as needed. Here are some additional tips:
1) Familiarize yourself with the content of each module prior to introducing it to the students, as you may find that certain activities need to be adjusted or skipped for certain students.
2) Meet individually with students or in small groups to set individualized goals.
3) Meet with students in small groups as needed to check for understanding and scaffold activities where required. This may include specifically teaching additional vocabulary words to students that require this support.
4) Reduce or increase the number of activities a student should complete where/when appropriate.
5) Be flexible in how students demonstrate their learning to post on Padlet by allowing videos, photos, drawings, writing or other creative methods that the students suggest.
Is it possible to do this unit at any point during the year?
This will depend on what part of the province you live in, as some of the activities do require that students go outside to find and gather local plants. Parts of this unit would be difficult to do in winter unless you live in an area that remains green year round. Ideally, this unit would be completed in the spring when there is lots of new growth and students are noticing these changes in their environment.
I am feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the different technology requirements and I am not sure that my students will be able to learn how to use all the different platforms listed. Please help!
We would encourage you to have a look through each of the individual modules and see that for the most part, as a lot of the platforms we have listed are actually integrated in the design process and are embedded into the modules for ease of use. The only platforms that your students will absolutely need to learn to navigate to complete activities from all the modules are the website itself, Google Meet (or the videoconferencing application of your choice), and Padlet.
I already use Google Classroom with my students - can I just have students submit their work there instead of using Padlet?
The wonderful thing about Padlet is that students can also view their classmates' posts and learn from each other. Padlet provides an important collaborative aspect that is difficult to replicate with Google Classroom. Ultimately, this decision is up to you, but you may find that your students are more motivated to complete the activities and share their learning when they have an authentic audience. We would recommend that you continue to use Google Classroom to post class reminders, set deadlines, and post additional material related to the modules that you would like your students interact with during this unit if you are used to using Google Classroom as an organizational tool.
I would love to use this unit but I would like to embed my own Padlets into the website for my students and/or make other changes. Is there a way for me to do this?
Yes! If you would like to you use this website with your students, please complete the "Duplicate Website File Request" form by following this link to our request form: https://forms.gle/4UKBkJyJZassNHrs7. Once we receive your e-mail address, we will be able share a duplicate copy of this website that you are welcome to change as needed. Our Padlets will be removed and you will be able to embed your own Padlets for your students. We do suggest that you keep the duplicate website private by changing the setting so that only individuals with the URL can view, and only sharing the URL with your students.
