Introduction
Please find below a variety of assessment tools you are welcome to use as part of this unit of learning. It is strongly recommended that teachers use their professional judgement and teacher's autonomy when they use these tools. All of them can be adjusted and adapted to meet the individual needs of students. Teachers are welcome to modify them as they wish and see fit within the larger semester curriculum and school's grading structure.
Pre-assessment tools
"Know Wonder Learned" wall in Padlet
It is recommended that teachers utilize the KWL wall in Padlet to activate students' prior knowledge before starting a new module of learning and to find out which students may need more intervention or enrichment. Please note, that the KWL strategy needs to be used gradually and teachers will need to revisit it throughout the module of learning. For example, at the beginning of each module, students will be asked to post what they know about a specific topic in the "Know (K)" section in Padlet and post their questions and wonders in the "Wonder (W)" section. At the end of the module, the students will revisit Padlet again and post their reflections of what they have learned about the topic in the "Learned (L)" section. Please note, this platform supports different formats such as a written reflection, a link, a video, an audio recording, or a picture.
Formative
Goals:
check students' progress
change instructions/materials or content if needed
gather overall information about students' learning.
Padlet will be the main platform for students to share their learning with the teacher and their classmates and therefore, it is recommended that teachers use this platform to meet the goals listed above. Students should be encouraged to post videos, pictures from their nature walks, written reflections, and topic-related material in Padlet in the "Sharing Circle" section. The artifacts posted in Padlet can be used as a form of a digital portfolio of students' learning and teachers can use them to track students' progress, daily/weekly activity, and gather information regarding their progress and learning. Students should be encouraged to try different formats when they engage in weekly reflections and comment on their peers' work too. Additionally, Padelt will be used to determine what the students "know", "wonder" and "have learned" about each topic.
Wordwalls will be used in some of the modules to check for students' understanding of the content and as a means of engaging them with the material provided on the website. On our website, you will be able to find such formats of Wordwalls as "Quizzes", "True or False" questions, "Matching Pairs" and others.
Summative
Goals:
determine what the students have learned at the end of each module
collect evidence of students' learning
Holistic Report
It is recommended that teachers track students' activity in each module and make note of students' contributions by using a checklist and taking notes. Additionally, teachers can refer to the KWL wall in Padlet. At the end of the course, teachers can use the collected information to provide students with a holistic report where they can outline students' strengths, areas for growth, and ways to support learning. Additionally, the report can include information about students' online activity, contributions, interactions with peers, and overall engagement with the content.
Other Assessment Tools
We suggest that teachers keep an ongoing running record of all online activities of their students throughout each module. The checklist with space for teachers to write and keep anecdotal notes will be provided on our website.
Instructions for Teachers to use the checklist:
Duplicate the checklist below and add it to your own Google Drive. DO NOT edit the original checklist.
Once added to your Google Drive, make separate tabs for each student in your class.
Each module is colour-coded for your own convenience. Once students post something in the "K", "W", "L" sections in Padlet or the "Sharing Circle", record a date and check it off the list. There is a space for you to write anecdotal notes for each student after each module of learning.
The checklist is customizable, so please feel free to add or remove sections that do not work for you or your students.
Please remember that the information you collect about students' learning, engagement with the content and online activity can be used to write a holistic report for each student at the end of the course. Enjoy!
