Who is this for?
The project is targeted for Kindergarten to Grade 3 students living in a rural environment in British Columbia surrounded by beautiful nature that are participating in remote at-home learning, or homeschooling. If any teachers would like to use this website in their classrooms, they are welcome to do so and access materials and resources posted on this website. This unit was designed to align with BC's Curriculum.
What are we doing?
This project is a cross-curricular study center for exploring nature in which primary students can build competencies, including science skills, literary skills, math skills, and technical skills. Students are able to arrange their own time to complete relevant courses according to the course activity guidance on the platform during five modules of learning. The design theme is learning with nature; students will discover the knowledge both digitally and outside rather than learning theoretical knowledge in the classroom. The remote platform can be accessed through any common electronic device such as laptops, computers, tablets and smartphones.
Why are we doing this?
The 21st-century is regarded as an era of science and technology. With the continuous development of society, the skills used by human electronic technology have gradually become the necessary default skills. In the new era, teachers are required to be good at using technology to improve teaching content, changing from a single knowledge transmitter to a delegator who encourages students to explore and acquire knowledge by themselves.
Remote teaching has become mainstream under the stimulus of the world pandemic. However, according to the investigation of Montag and Elhai (2020), children and adolescents spend too much time on screen-time could cause manifold detrimental consequences – ranging from ADHD to lower empathic skills (Lachmann et al., 2018, Melchers et al., 2015, Sariyska et al., 2015, 2008, as cited in Montag & Elhai, 2018). Following the consensus that promotes healthy living and scientific learning, teaching children to use computer technology from an early age and encouraging children to learn outdoors conforms to the development of today's society. In exploring nature, students will find the knowledge available in plants and acquire skills according to the instructions of each module. As the project is entirely online, students are able to gain an increased competence in technological skills.
The platform will not fully replace the original traditional classroom courses of students, but it attempts to provide students with an opportunity to combine the knowledge learned in the classroom with outside experiences. This will hopefully help students to build meaningful knowledge and understanding through immersion in an interactive and engaging environment. This site may be used as a stand-alone unit, or as an extension to traditional courses. The purpose is to give students a different experience and use novel teaching methods to mobilize children's enthusiasm for learning.
