Shadowing & Electives
Shadowing - For University of Calgary medical students only
If you are interested in shadowing one of our physiatrists, please go through the following steps:
Take a look at the various staff and clinic profiles here, and think about the area(s) of physiatry you would like to learn more about:
Brain Injury Rehabilitation
Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation
Stroke Rehabilitation
Amputee Rehabilitation (Prosthetics & Orthotics)
Neuromuscular Medicine and Electromyography
Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation
Pediatric Rehabilitation
Cancer Rehabilitation
Trauma Rehabilitation
Burn Rehabilitation
Cardiac/Pulmonary Rehabilitation
If you find areas of interest to you, please arrange shadowing experiences by contacting division administrative assistant Daphne Bates at daphne.bates@ahs.ca who will forward your email to a physiatrist in that area of interest. Alternatively, you may contact a physiatrist or their administrative assistant directly. Medical student pre-clerks at the University of Calgary may arrange Career Exploration weeks in physiatry, through Undergraduate Medical Education (UME). Clerks may arrange clerkship electives in physiatry.
If you have additional questions, please contact our program administrator Daphne and she will assist you (see the contact page for further information).
Please note shadowing opportunities may be limited depending on staff availability.
Once a staff preceptor is willing to take you on to shadow them, please provide confirmation that you have permission from the UofC medical school to join them. This can be done via emailing a letter you generate from your Associate Dean regarding the details of shadowing experiences.
Electives
We are happy to accept elective students so long as we have capacity to have you as time and space permit. Please note that we do receive a high number of elective requests, so it is recommended you request your elective as soon as you are able to. Unfortunately we do not have control or input regarding the Elective Portal that is utilized by students to apply for electives.
Elective students are placed with two preceptors each week, in order to balance spending time with one preceptor over multiple days but also seeing various types of practices and patient populations.
If you are interested in completing an elective with us:
Follow the Visiting Electives request process as outlined by the Undergraduate Medical Education program.Â
We have a form that helps us understand the goals of your elective (areas of physiatry you would like exposure to, if you want to meet the program director, etc.) - please fill this out so we can best tailor the elective to your requests.
Please contact visiting@ucalgary.ca if you have any questions about the process.
