Pkmn Fantasy University is first and foremost an Anthro/Gijinka Pokémon RP group. It's a gated community on Discord where Artists and Roleplayers get together to have their characters interact within the same Universe!
You don't need to be able to draw or RP in order to join but having at least one of those skills (drawing or writing) is strongly recommended.
The group itself, in a way, acts as two groups in one! We have two primary settings, parallel worlds that are connected to each other- a modern-day University setting as well as a Fantasy World setting!
Nope, you don't need to know how to draw to join! But, you will need to know how to write in order to participate in the group. If you are not an artist, you will need to find someone to commission or make art for your application- and don't worry, we do have a number of members who are willing to draw app art for your characters!
You will be allowed to do written submissions for things such as events or quests.
This is a crossbreed between a Slice of Life in Modern University group and a Light Medieval Fantasy group. If you know what an Isekai is, or more generally speaking, Portal Fantasy, where someone is magically transported from one world to another, that's a significant focus of the group! The characters that are transported from one world to the other swap places- and bodies- with each other and need to learn how to adjust to life in their counterpart's body in a completely unfamiliar world, perhaps learning to see things from a different perspective.
Bi-monthly event prompts will be provided, focusing on events happening simultaneously between the University world and the Fantasy world. It is mostly light-hearted fun with plenty of whacky shenanigans! That being said, any Art or Written Works/RP centered around topics like Drugs, Alcohol, Sex, Excessive Violence, Abuse, etc., should be heavily censored or done privately.
Members are allowed to create up to 10 characters at the start! This can be any combination of characters, however do note that creating a linked pair will take up 2 slots. More slots may be earned through earning points in the group. You may also have as many NPC characters as you wish. They may be given their own apps and all, but cannot gain points, rp by themselves, or talk in the live chatrooms.
This group's content rating is PG-13, and we are going to be strict on that, especially when it comes to suggestive/sexual 'furry' art.
When you arrive in the group's Discord server, you will be asked to make an introductory post for yourself and include a safe-for-work social media account that contains no NSFW works at all in said introductory post. The account can link to alternate accounts that have their own purposes, but the posts you make on that account specifically, the images, the text, even what posts you Like on that account, should not contain NSFW imagery or explicit references.
If you're wondering why you can't join if you post an 18+/NSFW account in your introduction post, it's because we have minors in our group, and we do not tolerate sharing porn with minors. If we notice that you shared with us an 18+ account, we will ask you to remove it and post a SFW account instead. If you do not comply with our rules, we may remove you from the server.
Any art or RP that would normally require a mature content warning, such as for depictions of sex scenes or graphic violence, will not be allowed into the group. If you try to submit art that is not suitable for the group's rating, we will remove the submission and ask you to change or not post it at all. Feel free to make whatever you want outside of the group; it's your art, after all. However, please do not share any kind of sexual art in the regular channels- NSFW works must be shared privately or in the designated NSFW channel. We will give you a warning if we notice you sharing nsfw works in the regular chats.
There can be some violence and mild gore, but please keep graphic depictions/descriptions to a minimum. Cussing is allowed as well, however do not abuse this ruling on harsh language to say nasty and offensive things to other members.
Students and other University world characters should NOT be carrying weapons or drugs onto University Campus, point blank period. If they were found out, they would get in severe trouble if not be expelled! Save the weapons for the Fantasy world.
For University characters, it is required that they be Anthros- and ONLY Anthros!
For Fantasy characters, they can be Anthros, Gijinkas, Ferals with human-level intelligence, or D&D races.
D&D races include, but are not limited to...
Centaurs, Sphinxes, Orcs, Werewolves, Vampires, Elves, Dwarves, Faeries
Shape-changers (Changelings or Shifters)
Elemental folk (Genasi)
Birdfolk (Aarakocra, Owlin, or Kenku)
Draconic folk (Dragonborn, Half-Dragons, or Kobolds)
Demon-kin (Tieflings)
Goblin-kin (Goblins, Hobgoblins, or Bugbears)
Robotic folk (Warforged)
Cat folk (Tabaxi or Leonin)
Rabbit-folk (Harengon)
Serpent-folk (Nagas)
Slimes (Plasmoids)
and Merfolk (Triton or Mermaids)
They MUST be recognizably Pokémon, and there are no restrictions on what species any character can be!
Mythical Pokémon such as Mew or Celebi, Legendaries such as Ho-Oh and Miraidon, Ultra Beasts such as Guzzlord or Pheromosa, Paradox Pokémon such as Slither Wing or Iron Valiant, and certain Beta Designs are all allowed.
Do note, Legendary Pokémon are no more powerful than a non-Legendary Pokémon- this applies to characters in both worlds.
Pkmn Fantasy University uses Pokémon World regions from the main series games, such as Kanto, Sinnoh, and Galar, rather than irl Earth locations. This group focuses on three of the Pokémon World regions specifically- Paldea (from Scarlet/Violet), Kalos (from X/Y), and Galar (from Sword/Shield), and even more specifically, the primary location for both the University and Fantasy worlds is within the city of Hammerlocke in the Galar region.
Hammerlocke is where both the University world's very own Fantasy University (yes, it is actually called Fantasy University in-universe) and the Fantasy world's King Arthur's castle grounds are located.
You can read more about the important locations here.
Yes, the two worlds that make up the settings the characters are in are the University world, which runs on (idealized) real world logic, and the Fantasy world, which runs on light fantasy logic. Both locations are the same world, but in parallel universes.
Because these worlds are in fact parallel universes, they actually run on the same time! If it's noon in Hammerlocke in one world, it's noon in Hammerlocke in the other world. If one hour passes in the University world, one hour passes in the Fantasy world.
Yes, if your character is a Pokémon that can evolve, such as Eevee, you can certainly go ahead and evolve them! Evolution is not at all required, of course, it's only an option for those who want it. You will have to purchase an Evolution Stone from the Shop and let the mod team know when you update your character's visuals! Items are used immediately upon purchase, so only buy an Evolution Stone when you're 100% certain you're ready to use it!
The Darkness itself is the greatest threat to the characters and their respective worlds! Despite the Paldean Kingdom being ground zero for the Darkness Virus, the people of the Paldea region are not the antagonists of this story. Instead, think of the Darkness more as an accidental zombie virus outbreak, and the bad guys are those who have become addiccted to the new Dark Magic powers that they have. Of course, this doesn't mean you can't have bad guys who aren't infected! Plenty of people are taking advantage of the outbreak situation.
To see a more comprehensive list on what we will and won't allow characters to be able to do, please read through our Character Guidelines page.
In short, though,
University world characters do not have any special powers whatsoever- compared to the games, they're nerfed. Bird 'mons cannot fly, insect 'mons cannot climb up flat vertical walls- they're very much like normal irl people. They aren't completely stripped of anything that makes them whatever typing they are, though.
Fire-types can't breathe fire, but they can be very warm to the touch and tolerate hot and cold temperatures very well. Water-types cannot breathe underwater, but they can hold their breath for a long time and have a natural affinity towards swimming. Fighting-types don't have ridiculously superhuman strength, but they can build muscle mass easier than the average 'mon. Psychic-types cannot read minds, but they may have a stronger sense of intuition and empathy compared to others. Ghost-types cannot phase through walls, but they may see quite well at night and maybe hover a small amount off the ground.
Fantasy world characters are much less nerfed- they are allowed to have special powers such as fire-breathing, flight, or telekinesis. A lot of their abilities will ultimately depend on the sort of Class they are, and the classes we have available for Fantasy characters are Mages (characters who wield magic powers), Warriors (physical heavy hitters and tanks with next to no magical prowess), Rogues (sneaky scouts and tacticians), Rangers (characters who rely on usually nonmagical ranged attacks), and Support (healers, bards, and other characters who focus more on buffing allies/debuffing foes or manipulating terrain rather than dealing damage).
As mentioned in the question about powers in general,
For University characters, they have no special abilities and therefore cannot use Pokémon moves like in the games. You will want to read up on our Character Guidelines to see what is and isn't okay.
Fantasy characters (Linked Pairs as well as Villains) will have move sets that you will need to create! In the group, we call these move sets 'Skills'. They can either be Pokémon moves straight from the games or other skills you can pull from other places, from D&D to comics to cartoons to video games, or you can simply make them up yourself! You'll find more about that by reading up on How to Join.
Solo Fantasy characters do not require Skills, so you don't have to worry about filling that section out for such characters.
About modern day technologies existing in the Fantasy world,
Guns are usable, but not modern ones! The technology that exists in the Fantasy world is more akin to what one may find in a Steampunk sort of world, as the Fantasy folk focused more on developing their understanding of magic than developing nonmagical tech.
A couple of examples of guns that are allowed are Matchlocks and Muskets. These weapons would have to be carefully loaded with gunpowder and set off with a match to fire. Due to their incredibly long reload, they are not exactly used much in a world where magic and highly skilled archers thrive. They're also older guns. Please don't use anything past the 17th century!
Not at all! You could even make an 18-year-old University Anthro Lucario Girl who is linked with a 70-year-old Gijinka Gengar man if you wanted to. The Linked Pairs can also be similar to self-insert characters, where they look and act very much like the same person. You have a lot of freedom when deciding how similar or dissimilar the two halves of your Linked Pair are.
Keep in mind, often times, the University character isn't the one who creates the image of the Fantasy character they become linked with! Sometimes that happens, other times it's some other miscellaneous event that puts the visage of the Fantasy world character in the University world character's mind. From a specific painting they saw in a museum on a trip to a cloud passing by that happened to make their imagination run wild as a kid to receiving a drawing done by someone else, there's a lot of possibilities for how the characters establish their Link to begin with!
For University characters, they should wear whatever modern clothing is appropriate for a typical person commonly found on university grounds. If you want to draw your character in some kind of cosplay, it's fine to do that, but their regular app reference art should be of them in a more casual outfit, something they would wear in regular day to day life. There is no uniform for University characters, but we do ask that the characters are wearing complete outfits and not skimpy underwear in their official app art. Skimpy underwear wouldn't be PG-13, after all.
Your Fantasy characters are more welcome to wear outfits that don't look too modern or futuristic! No sneakers, no jeans and t-shirt. Of course, maybe don't put them in an overly sexualized outfit.
If you aren't sure where to start in terms of outfits for a Fantasy character, you can look up "fantasy outfit" or "medieval fantasy attire" on Google or Pinterest to get some ideas for the sort of outfits we usually have in mind for fantasy world characters.
They sure can!
In the University world, characters may only have smaller Pokémon who don't have special abilities as pets. University world pets are just like real world dogs, cats, birds, snakes, etc. On campus grounds, there's enough space to allow for pet housing, even for characters who dorm!
In the Fantasy World, all Pokémon act as how they would in the games- they have abilities like fire breathing or levitating things with their minds, and if the 'mon can be tamed, Fantasy characters can have them as a pet!
Yes, that is most certainly fine. You can connect your own characters' histories with each other, Linked Pair or otherwise, as well as connect your character's history with another member's character. This goes for characters in both worlds!
There are indeed Pokémon who have more than one form. Having a character be able to change forms at all is optional to begin with, and it does not require an item to change a character's form. You are just as free to ignore the possibility of your character changing forms if you don't want to think about it that much as you are to decide that your Deerling character now has four different looks depending on the current season, but if you are considering the possibility of your character being able to change forms, we do have some guidelines surrounding that!
In both the University world and the Fantasy world, Pokémon species that can change forms freely include the following
Deerling/Sawsbuck (depends on seasons)
Cherrim, Shaymin (specific to time of day)
Castform (depends on current weather)
Deoxys, Burmy/Wormadam, Rotom, Arceus, Darmanitan, Tornadus, Thundurus, Landorus, Enamorus, Keldeo, Meloetta, Genesect, Furfrou, Aegislash, Xerneas, Oricorio, Silvally, Morpeko, Eiscue (can occur whenever)
Pokémon species that you will have to commit to one form or the other only include the following
Tauros (Kantonian/Regular, Paldean/Combat, Blaze, or Aqua only)
Unown (pick one letter only)
Groudon, Kyogre (Regular or Primal only)
Shellos/Gastrodon (East or West only)
Dialga, Palkia, Giratina (Regular or Origin only)
Basculin (Red, Blue, or White only)
Kyurem (Regular, Black, or White only)
Vivillon (pick one pattern only)
Flabébé/Floette/Florges (pick one flower type only)
Pumpkaboo/Gourgeist (pick one size only)
Zygarde (Core, 10%, 50%, or Complete only)
Hoopa (Confined or Unbound only)
Lycanroc (Midday, Midnight, or Dusk only)
Wishiwashi (Solo or School only)
Minior (pick one Core color only)
Necrozma (Regular or Ultra only)
Toxtricity (Low Key or Amped only)
Alcremie (pick one color only)
Eternatus (Regular or Eternamax only)
Squawkabilly (pick one color only)
Palafin (Zero or Hero only)
Tatsugiri (pick one color only)
Dudunsparce (Two-Segment or Three-Segment only)
For Fantasy world characters, certain form changes, such as Palkia Regular to Origin, Wishiwashi Solo to School, Eternatus Regular to Eternamax, Palafin Zero to Hero, Hoopa Confined to Unbound, Necrozma Regular to Ultra, or Kyurem Regular to Black or White can be tied to high-percentage-unlock Skills! But, in this instance, the change must be a temporary one with the character reverting to their original normal form when the Skill's power ends.
If you're unhappy with the species you've chosen for your character, then you can buy the Species Changing Potion from the Shop!
Keep in mind, if you want to change both species for a Linked Pair instead of just one, you'll have to purchase two Species Changing Potions. Items are instantly used when you buy them, so be 100% sure you're ready to update your character(s) and that you have enough Credits when you purchase the item! The mod team also has to be made aware of the changes made so the database can stay up to date with correct information.
You are absolutely free to completely take out and replace characters in the group! If you request to switch out a Linked Pair, you may do so once you confirm with the mods, but you may not switch out again for 3 months.
If you simply wish to fully remove a character (or a Linked Pair), simply let the mod team know which one you'll be removing, and we will go ahead and remove them from your page here in the database.
Love one half of your Linked Pair but not vibing with the other half? You can go to the Shop and buy the Character Retcon item to replace one of your characters with a completely new character.
Keep in mind, once you retcon a character, your Linked Pair will have to start over back at having only 1% Power unlocked, and there is a 2-month cool down period before you can retcon again. You will, however, keep all the Credits you earned.
University characters are not at all allowed to be fusions. For example, you will not be allowed to have an Arcanine/Chansey nurse, a Rhydon/Pikachu professor, a Cutiefly/Zigzagoon student, or an Umbreon/Espeon librarian. University characters are restricted to being only 1 species of Pokémon. They can have subtle traits that can indicate their heritage/parentage, but it needs to be clear which Pokémon the character is.
Part of why this is how we're ruling it is to avoid the phenomenon known as Sparklemons.
Part of it is, quite simply, to emphasize the difference between the more ordinary University world and the fantastical Fantasy world.
Speaking of, yes, Fusion designs are allowed in the Fantasy world to an extent and are typically judged on a case-by-case basis.
The primary guideline to follow for fusion designs is, you must pick a primary species for the character to be and can give them attributes of another species, so long as the secondary species can be justified with a corresponding D&D race.
For example, if you wanted to design a Leafeon/Skiddo fusion, you can make a Leafeon Satyr. Since a Satyr is a viable D&D race, a humanoid with goat horns and a goat's lower body, you could give your Leafeon a few Skiddo traits such as horns and their goat legs, so long as the character is otherwise obviously primarily a Leafeon.
On the application, you would write that they're a Leafeon Satyr (Skiddo variant).
This being said, certain ideas for species combinations simply will not work.
If you are unsure about a character's design, please show it in the Help channel in the Discord server or ask a mod directly about it to receive feedback!
You are allowed to start out with a Solo character, and, if you so desire, you can later on turn them into a Linked Pair.
You are also allowed to keep your Solo characters as Solos!
Despite the focus this group has on Linked Pairs, actually having a Linked Pair is not required.
Solo characters do not have a limit for how many you can make, and they can be from either the University world or the Fantasy world.
Solo characters are singular characters from one world or the other and they do not possess the ability to swap with someone else from the opposite world. It is strongly recommended for those who are new to the group to start out with a Solo and later on, only if they want, turn them into a Linked Pair.
University Solo characters who are not linked pairs cannot use the Mana Tablet Chat. However, Fantasy characters who are not linked pairs can.
