In the story of PKMN Fantasy University, the setting no longer takes place in real world locations such as the US, Europe, Japan, etc, but instead takes place within Pokémon Regions.
The main regions that the story will be revolved around will be the Galar, Kalos, and Paldea regions, as they are the closest together in a map such as this. The other Regions exist, but they are much farther away to the point where the Darkness has not spread to them, therefore they will play a minimal part in the story (for now).
Each Region takes place in modern 2020's (during real world time) with all the current technology that you would find from our real world. These regions also have their own main University, with Galar's having Fantasy University.
In the Fantasy World, the map is the same, but it takes place during the Medieval era and the regions are called Kingdoms. So in other words, the Galar Kingdom, Kalos Kingdom, and Paldea Kingdom. Each have their own Castle Grounds to train their land's warriors, these places are exactly in the same spots as where their Universities would be in the real world.
We'll go more in depth of who rules each Kingdom and dive into a bit of information regarding each one.
King Arthur, King of the Galar Kingdom
The Galar Region & Kingdom is the main setting of Fantasy University. It is where all the characters are attending College, and it is the main land which develops the magic tablet that makes swapping souls between Parallel Universes possible. The town that both the University and Castle reside in is called Hammerlocke.
This Kingdom is ran by none other than King Arthur! He is a Bellboyant who is 30 years old. Despite his age, he comes off to be quite the young looking character! He's a very positive person who wants the best for his Kingdom and people. He recently became King after he was handed the title from his father, who had done an excellent job running the Kingdom beforehand. It's also why he has such an amazing team of scientists that were able to develop the magic tablet in response to the Darkness. He's still a bit new at the job, but he's doing his best! His Parallel Universe counterpart, like all heads of the Kingdom, are also in charge of the University in the real world.
The Galar Kingdom is currently the safest Kingdom of the three in this story (not counting outside regions such as Unova, Kanto, etc), as it is the farthest away from the Paldea region, which is ground zero for the Darkness Virus Outbreak. There are very few, if any, infected in the Galar Kingdom.
It is also important to know that the magic tablet's swapping function only works within the Galar Kingdom, voice & chat connections work just fine, but you won't be able to swap souls once you depart into the Kalos region and beyond.
The Kalos Kingdom is the inbetween of The Galar and Paldea regions.
The Paldea Kingdom is where the Darkness Virus Outbreak originally began. There was no evil intent on creating such an outbreak, but the virus has been released and those living in the Paldea Kingdom have been suffering from it the most. Countless lives have either been taken or infected, and those casualties have reflected back over in the real world where those living in the Paldea region have been suddenly dying more. To them, it seems as random acts of calamity, whether it's getting sick, getting into accidents, etc, but those who have been to the Fantasy World know the real cause...
The number of sudden deaths happening in the Paldea region has gotten onto the news, so those in all other regions will be aware of what is going on. As for the Paldea Kingdom, word spreading is a bit slower, and not everyone fully believes it yet. Some Kingdoms, such as the Galar Kingdom, have been taking the situation much more seriously than other Kingdoms. Regardless, it's heavily advised to stay away from the Paldea Kingdom right now until the Darkness can be combatted against.
Regions such as Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, and Alola exist and are in similar spots to where the locations they were based off are. This means that Unova is where the United States would be, Kanto is where Japan would be, etc. You can have your character come from these places, but make note that both your College and Fantasy character would likely have originated from this location, and both would have to have travelled to Galar.
Your character is also allowed to have come from the Paldea region, it's very likely that those living there would want to escape.
Non Mainline game locations such as Orre or the Orange Islands are not apart of FU's world.
For the sake of simplicity, the main language spoken in Galar, Kalos, and Paldea will be in English. Other regions will also be able to speak English, but it is alright to have your character speak a different language if you really want them to, such as those from Kanto/Johto to speak Japanese.
Culture is not based on real life counterparts, so being from Kalos does not mean you are French, or being from Unova doens't make you American. Feel free to base different parts of a region for different cultures!
The real world uses only Anthro characters with feral Pokémon as pets. Both the people and the animals in this world have no powers or abilities to speak of and are on par with regular humans and animals. There are certain traits that certain Pokémon types and species can had, which can be read over in the Character Guidelines Page.
As for the Fantasy World... Anthro, Gijinka, and DnD races exist where you can change a species' design to fit along with whatever race you decide to make them! The feral Pokémon in this world have their natural Pokémon abilities here. As for the characters, they too have Pokémon Powers, but primarily use their abilities they've learned from training.
Yes! It does appear that this map does have the Galar region upside down, so keep that in mind, as the North of the original Galar map is now considered south in this connected map!
Storywise, it's because the Dynamax energy is what powers the tablet to make soul swapping possible, and the Dynamax energy only exists within the Galar region. Mechanic wise, it's to add a bit of risk for characters to dive into the Kalos Kingdom and beyond and not have the ability to swap when coming in contact with someone infected by the Darkness.
