Best Practice Research
In order to accommodate for our area of improvement in the recruitment training process, we have decided to further solidify our findings with two other chapters on JMU’s campus. The first chapter we looked into was Gamma Phi Beta. At this chapter, members attend three recruitment workshops that run all day long, however this varies in other chapters. The members main source of training is conducted through recruitment school where they learn about each round, rules and regulations, etc. In terms of reinforcement for recruitment training, the Gamma Phi Beta chapter is much more strict than the Kappa Alpha Theta chapter when it comes to days/hours of preparation. The other chapter we looked into was the Phi Mu chapter on JMU’s campus. While Gamma Phi Beta had three days of training, Phi Mu enforces a week long training process but only 2 to 3 hours per day.
After investigating Gamma Phi Beta and Phi Mu on JMU’s campus, we also got feedback from other sororities at other universities. Alpha Gamma Delta at both University of South Carolina and Longwood University have a work week (the days leading up to formal recruitment) which allows members to train and practice. But in addition to the 3/4/5 days of work week, there is training throughout the school year as well to help refresh memory or for extra support for the younger members. Pi Beta Phi at Virginia Tech also has workshops scattered through the semesters and a 3 day work week that also incorporates mock rounds where they get to practice with the other sororities at their universities.
Another best practice research we have found would be to involve alumni of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority in helping with the preparation, coming up with ideas, or even just giving their input with the recruitment training process. The alumni have seen and have experienced the entire process of recruitment. They can then share their personal experiences, insights, guidance and mentorship while delivering new tactics on how to improve on the training process. They will also maintain the tradition and continuity that Kappa Alpha Theta values which can inspire current recruiters. (add more info)
In summary, after analyzing our area for improvement we have come to the decision that taking in other sororities ideas, incorporating workshops and involvement of the alumni will be beneficial to the Kappa Alpha Theta’s recruitment training process. By utilizing new ideas, it will give the sorority a new insight and can make the members feel more comfortable and relaxed instead of overwhelmed with the recruitment process.
