Travatan (travoprost 0.004%)
Is a prostaglandin analog that works to reduce pressure in the eye by increasing the amount of fluid that drains from the eye. Travatan is used to treat increased pressure in the eye (ocular hypertension) and open-angle glaucoma in patients who cannot use or do not respond to other medicines.
Travatan Z (BAK FREE)
is a new formulation eliminates benzalkonium chloride (BAK) from Alcon's existing Travatan solution and replaces BAK with SofZia™ a robust ionic buffered preservative system that is gentle to the ocular surface. Alcon developed this BAK-free version of Travatan because long-term use of topical solutions containing BAK may compromise the ocular surface and eacerbate conditions such as dry eye.
* Prostaglandin analogs are used to reduce intraocular pressure in people who have glaucoma or high intraocular pressure (ocular hypertension). They can be used alone or in combination with other glaucoma medicines.
* SofZia™ is the most recent advancement in the field of ophthalmic preservatives and is the preservative system contained in one preparation of travoprost (Travatan Z®, Alcon, Texas). It has been demonstrated that sofZia-preserved travoprost induces corneal and conjunctival changes similar to preservative-free artificial tears. Furthermore, travoprost with sofZia also induced reduced amounts of conjunctival inflammation and corneal changes when compared with travoprost treated with BAK
