This tool involves a retrospective evaluation of a pharmacist's teamwork and leadership skills. There may be some overlap with the Quality Improvement Project Assessment Tool (QIPAT) but the LEADER focusses on teamwork and leadership skills demonstrated when completing a task rather than collecting and analysing data following the implementation of a change in practice.
Various activities allow a pharmacist to demonstrate their teamwork and leadership skills including:
Managing a clinical incident / medication error as part of a medicines safety rotation - this could involve completing a root cause analysis
Writing or updating a guideline, procedure or policy. As part of this task they would need to seek feedback from stakeholders and ensure the final version is submitted to the relevant approval committee
Reviewing and updating a section of the Trust's formulary
Implementing a switch of medication in the Trust to support a cost improvement programme initiative
The pharmacist is allocated a task to complete and upon completion they discuss what they have done with an assessor. Questions can be asked to clarify decisions made and aid reflection and learning from the experience. Examples of outcomes from the RPS Post-registration Pharmacist Curriculum that may have been demonstrated by the pharmacist include:
Promoting pharmacy services and develops the profession
Recognising opportunities for change, innovation and quality improvement
Demonstrating self-awareness, resilience and adaptability
