Overview
This page provides learning materials to help tutors develop some of the key skills required to fulfil their roles. The content from this page will be applied to scenarios during future webinars.
There are two modules on the e-LfH website aimed at practice and educational supervisors. The modules can be accessed after you have registered for an account. Although some links may not work and there is a reference made to the Foundation Pharmacy Framework from 2019 instead of the Post-registration Foundation Curriculum, the modules provide some useful underpinning knowledge that you will need to fulfil various workplace supervisor roles.
The Core Skills for Pharmacy Practice and Educational Supervisors module is recommended for practice and educational supervisors, with several elements also useful for mentors. The module focusses on defining roles, patient centred teaching, providing feedback, planning teaching and encouraging reflection and role model behaviours. The module should take around 90 minutes and does not have to be completed in a single sitting. Key areas covered include:
Definitions of coaching and mentoring
Explanation the basic principles of patient-based teaching
Principles of effective feedback
Setting appropriate learning activities to address identified learning outcomes
Describing and encouraging development through reflection
Identifying what it means to be a role model
Purpose and benefits of assessing learners
The Enhanced Skills for Practice and Educational Supervisors module builds on the core skills module. Key areas covered include:
Encouraging you to consider different styles of mentoring and which one you prefer
Discussing some supervised learning event tools
Identifying and helping learners requiring additional support
There are individual sections which discuss ES roles in different contexts (e.g. Trainee Pharmacists, Postgraduate Diploma Students)
Links to references to support and enhance your learning as a practice and / or educational supervisor are provided below.
