The shot must be placed on the neck and not dropped off the neck prior to the throw.
The shot must be put and not thrown.
The implement must land between the two sector lines in order to count as a mark. If the implement lands on the sector lines or outside of the lines, it is a foul and does not register a mark, but it counts as an attempt.
The athlete can enter the circle from any direction, but must exit the back half of the circle, once the implement has landed. Leaving the circle from the front of the circle or prior to the implement landing will count as a foul and no mark for that attempt.
The athlete can not step on the top or sides of the toeboard in the shot put, nor the top of the ring for the other throws contested in the circle (discus/hammer).
Typically there are 3 attempts in a competition. In larger meets, such as championship meets or certain invitationals, there may be 3 additional throws in the finals for the number athletes that are in the placing for points, plus one additional thrower. For example, if points are scored to 6th place, then, there will be 7 throwers in finals.
There are 4 mainly contested throws that use a circle. The shot put, discus, hammer and weight throws.
The shot put, hammer and weight throws, use the same diameter circle, 7 feet.
The discus circle is 8'2.5" or 2.5-meter.
The shot put circle has a toe board at the front of the circle, as oppose to the other events that are thrown from the circle.
