Lesson 1: Meaning of Conventional Assessment
The difference between Traditional and Authentic Assessment
Issues and concern in Conventional Assessment
The purpose of assessment is to gather relevant information about student performance or progress or to determine student interest to make judgement about his/her learning progress.
Conventional Assessment- refers to traditional assessment of testing, usually standardized and use pen and paper with multiple-choice, true or false or matching type test items.
According to De Guzman-Santos (2007) the difference between authentic and alternative assessment is that alternative assessment is in direct contrast to what is known as performance evaluations, traditional assessment, standardized assessment or summative assessment while the authentic assessment gives student situations that occur in the real- world which require them to apply their relevant skills and knowledge.
Sigh (2014) enumerated some of the issues and concern in assessment including lack of transparency in assessment system, no involvement of students in the assessment process, most system are still based on marks, very less use of informal and alternative assessment and etc.
